Brú na Bóinne

Filed under: Ireland, Photograph — MacDuff @ 10:32 am

oh, i know, i’m a whiny bastard

the inside of this tomb has a roofbox that lets in sunlight only 2-3 days per year (on purpose)

the most interesting part is that it’s one of the oldest prehistoric sites in the whole world AND that when it was “rediscovered” in the 17th and 18th centuries, all the visitors defaced it … they carved their initials in the walls and things

it’s nice to know that americans aren’t the only jerks =)

Funny thing is, the inside is used to seeing dead people. Which is good because the watertight roof keeps in all the boredom.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newgrange   <–doesn’t list how the face of the structure was “reconstructed” ON A GUESS by some archeologist in the 1970’s … what a waste!

this is the best wednesday for drinking

Filed under: Info / Explanation, Ireland, Object, Photograph — MacDuff @ 11:02 am

…when you wake up (after drinking yourself drunk on cinco de mayo)

~hair of the dog!~

also: somewhere in this case in the Jameson tourist trap (dublin, not midelton where they actually make the stuff) is a bottle of – guess – Midleton, from 1973, available for purchase for 4.000E (soo… $5,300?)

I only got to try 7 drinks on my tour. TYECORREL FOR LIFE!

did you know the irish were religious?

Filed under: Info / Explanation, Ireland — MacDuff @ 10:37 am

i found this place there called a “church” but i couldn’t tell if it was catholic or protestant – it’s all the same to those christians! especially in ireland!

Protestant and Catholic are actually anagrams. True story.

Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin

Filed under: Info / Explanation, Ireland, Object, Photograph, Portrait — MacDuff @ 12:20 pm

maybe i’m in a better mood or maybe the nostalgia is coming – i feel like i won’t get all these ireland pics out if i go one-by-one, so i’m assembling this one little package of photos from one area, and now i get to play narrator and you’re all victims of a slideshow (but one for which you choose the pace)

if it helps, replace the sound of my voice with that of morgan freeman! (hee hee)

i’m not sure i’ll do any more packages, but the historical jail certainly deserves its fair share of attention

( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilmainham_Gaol – a place full of stories, one of the most interesting is that of Charles Parnell … oh, or of the last guy to ever be held, who went on to be the country’s prime minister!)

this was inside, donated years after the close … captures a lot

a moment after i took this picture, i got caught up walking back to the group with the tour guide lady, and i told her all i know about historical jails: the 1856 Boston prison riot was caused by the prisoners being forced to eat the same thing every day: LOBSTER

i said it and thought it was funny, but she had this look like, “fuck i gotta deal with americans…”

SURPRISE~

Completely unrelatedly… i heard harry potter 8 is coming out in 2010, and dumbledore will come back to life and then there will be a real ending.

I heard harry potter 8 is a/k/a “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2” where the first page starts with “And so Harry woke from an awful nightmare…” which truly does discount everything back to about 1/2way in HP6 and revokes it from the harry potter canon.

True story.
